Arrived at 5pm to find out that food wasn't being served, despite booking a table and receiving no prior warning. Hotel/pub was also cold and empty. When we tried to check in, we were shown to a room which hadn't been cleaned or made up since the previous guests had vacated and was freezing cold. The poor young woman who was dealing with the booking (the only member of staff in the entire hotel/pub) seemed mortified that the room hadn't been prepared and she said she would sort it out. The only problem there was she had a lot on her plate, being the only member of staff on duty; other people were turning up with bookings for the restaurant and being turned away. It became clear she didn't really have time to sort our room out. She also informed us that there was currently no way of paying for anything as the cash till had been stolen a few days previous. To top it all off, there were virtually no draught beers on at the bar (Carling, Mahou and an obscure cider being the only ones available). Bearing in mind this was New Year's Eve and we were hoping for a night of celebration, having had no prior warning about any of these issues, we felt the situation was wholly unacceptable and didn't see how we could possibly stay there. Therefore we made the decision to go home, as disappointing as that was. We informed the young woman that we couldn't stay there and she said of course, she completely understood. Overall a very upsetting and distressing experience for me and my family!!
