The hotel has a great location and the local people in the village are friendly and nice peple. The armed guards at the front entrance makes a bizarre conflict with the image of a friendly neighbourhood. The location is great and the pool area is a great place to relax. The nearby beach is nice, but the lagoon is more rough and less walking friendly compared to the lagoon further south in f.ex. Paje. The staff at the hotel is friendly, but unfortunately they seems to have given up on the "african mentality" Staff are not self managed and even friendly and service minded, not very self driven with little personal initiatives. Toilet facilities are old and weared and required continuous maintenance during our stay. The food in the restataurant was OK, but nothing special. One evening we experienced a debrice from dishwashing of a pan in the food, and we had to contact management to get compensated for the food. Needless to say that the appetite suddenly disappeared. There are several restaurants further north on the beach that gives better options at more reasonable prices. The "natural" aircondition does not provide the promised results. Pay a few dollars more and go for a hotel with real A/C! Even when they lost power during night, they did not wanted to start the generators to run the fans, because of the noice. What's the point with emergency generators, if they are used only during day time..? Next time, we will stay another place, but Matemwe is a great place!
