The magnificent monastery Contessa Matilde is located in Collazzone, a delightful medieval hilltop village, characterised by the unmistakable features of the Umbrian landscape and surrounded by a 3-hectare park with local flowers and plants, aromatic herbs and an olive grove of 3,500 sq m. Its history is rich and intriguing. It was built as a Benedictine Abbey and ceded to the Poor Clares in 1228. The Blessed Simon of Collazzone, companion of Saint Francis of Assisi, was witness to the donation and his mother, the Countess Matilde, and her sisters moved to the monastery to live as cloistered nuns. The story goes that the Franciscan poet Jacopone da Todi found his last refuge at the Poor Clares. In 1520 the monastery was the hiding place of Thadea, the illegitimate daughter of Emperor Charles V. Afterwards, the monastery was probably slowly abandoned. When Napoleon invaded Italy, he confiscated and sold countless ecclesiastical property to private individuals, including the Monastery which in 1805 ended up in the possession of the family who still take care of it with great love and passion. The complex of Contessa Matilde, built around an open-air courtyard of rare beauty, is clad externally in old, exposed stone and was recently restored under the tutelage of the Ministry for Cultural Heritage. The preservation of all the original details and aspects were the guideline for the restoration work and the colours and materials are inspired by the Umbrian countryside. The interior is the result of a choice of style that has perfectly blended old and modern, combining fine furnishings with those of contemporary design, having every amenity while all the bedrooms are air-conditioned. The beautiful private swimming pool has a covered area for outdoor dining and a living area. Two other covered outdoor areas are equipped with a wood oven and barbecue, the ideal spots for cooking and enjoying pleasant outdoor meals. Contessa Matilde offers a unique opportunity for organising events and receptions in its large halls and outdoor spaces such as the courtyard. The property includes a Romanesque church located just outside the garden, with an old crypt; the church can occasionally be used for celebrations. On request, not included in the rent, the house is completed by a majestic living area located on the ground floor with direct entrance from the courtyard. The hall is equipped with tables, chairs, projection screen and a guest bathroom and can be used use for business meetings, ceremonies and parties. The Monastery, located in Collazzone, is the perfect starting point for excursions to Todi, Orvieto, Perugia, Assisi and Spoleto, as well as to Florence and Rome, as it is just a few kilometres from the E45 highway, that connects all of Umbria as well as Tuscany and Lazio. Services and shops for basic necessities can be found in Collazzone, just 5 minutes away on foot.
Interior:
The property is divided in two parts, each with outside entrance. MAIN HOUSE.The main entrance leads, on the left, to the large kitchen which, in turn, is connected to the dining room with windows facing the courtyard, which is set up for outdoor dining, and a guest bathroom. A staircase at the entrance leads up to the first floor with, on the right, a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower and, on the left, a sitting room with satellite TV, sofas and fireplace and a twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower. Going up a further flight of stairs, we come to 2 double bedrooms, with 2 adjacent bathrooms with shower, and, completing the floor, a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower. ANNEX. From the garden, an external staircase leads to the entrance of the annex, consisting of a large open-plan room, equipped with air conditioning, with dining area, kitchenette and sitting area furnished with soft sofas and fireplace. On the left is a double bedroom with loft bed and ensuite bathroom with shower and, on the right, is a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower. On an elevated floor, with independent access only from the outside, is the Tower of the Monastery, consisting of a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom with shower. Air condition in all bedrooms and one living room.
Park:
The estate in which the house is located extends for an area of about 3 hectares and is partly covered by a beautiful olive grove of 3500 sq m with suggestive light points for the night. Contessa Matilde, with breathtaking views over the Umbrian hills, is surrounded by numerous types of plants, shrubs, tall trees and flowers that brighten up the environment, all strictly from the area. Inside the wonderful open-air courtyard is a large, attractive dining area furnished with table and chairs. Other dining areas, perfect for relaxing and chatting with a good glass of wine, are in front of the main entrance and next to the staircase of the annex, equipped with barbecue and wood oven. For additional comfort, in the pool area, is a large gazebo with kitchenette, fridge, table, chairs, sofas and armchairs. Right after the automatic iron gate is an open-air parking area with space for 10 cars.Please notice that photos are taken in spring, therefore flower blossoming, and the colours of the gardens' grass could be different at the moment of your arrival at the villa.
Swimming Pool:
Open from the last Saturday of April until the first Saturday of October, the beautiful irregular-shaped swimming pool is situated on the lower terrace of the property and can be reached from the house down a flight of steps. It enjoys an open view of the surrounding countryside in front and you will be able to admire beautiful, exciting sunsets. The pool, lined in PVC with a stone border, has chlorine purification, internal lights and 3 large steps on one side for access to the water. It measures 12 x 6 m with the depth varying from 20 to 210 cm. Along the perimeter of the pool is the stone-paved sunbathing area, equipped with sunbeds and deck chairs, as well as a seating area with kitchenette, fridge, table, chairs, sofas and armchairs protected by a gazebo where you can rest in the shade or enjoy a relaxing meal. There is a hot-water shower.
