Upon arrival at the hotel there was a strong smell of sewage which unfortunately got worse through the night. By the morning it was clear that there was a serious problem with a sewage leak. I advised the receptionist who moved us to a new room the next morning, the communal doors were opened and the smell could escape. However as soon as these doors were closed the smell accumulated again. Our new room was fine and did not smell but all the common areas did for the remainder of the trip. We were told that it was difficult to arrange a service engineer over a weekend. This is understandable but I would have expected to be refunded the not small cost of our stay this being the case. Expedia arranged a refund of the room only on the first night but not breakfast. No apology was given from the hotel. We felt the whole stay should have been refunded, the first nights sleep was ruined due to being woken up by the smell! Which should show how bad it was.
