Acredita-se que tenha sido construída na segunda metade do século I. Desde a sua construção e até aos dias de hoje tem sido utilizada constantemente servindo a diversos propósitos: Lutas de Gladiadores, queima de hereges na idade Média, habitação de prostitutas e, mais recentemente, palco de grandes espetáculos de teatro, ópera, concertos de rock e shows de cantores famosos.
