St Mary's church - churchyard. The eastern section of St Mary's churchyard. St Mary's church is located at the northern end of the village, above the primary school > 1270629 east of The Street. Sadly, the church is kept locked and visitors and pilgrims do not appear to be welcome here. The church contains a famous wall painting which depicts the life of St Catherine in a number of frames > 321181 some of these dated to about 1400. According to the Norfolk Churches website http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/sporle/sporle.htm the building has a complex architectural history.

Houses on The Street. Sporle is a village that is mainly built along the main street, called The Street. It is situated 2 miles distant from Swaffham. The village post office is housed in the community centre. The village also has a pub > 1270538 and a primary school > 1270629 a village shop and 2 churches - St Mary's and a Primitive Methodist church > 1270584 a little further down the road.

Beautiful hotel mid city centre, bus and train station only a short walk away. Staff was friendly and service minded staff. I have deducted for the slowest elevator I have ever experienced (but atleast they have one). also the rooms were incredibly hot with temperature set at default to 26 degrees. ...

Grade I listed The church dates mainly from the 14th and 15th century, the west tower was rebuilt in 1864. There is a west tower, nave, chancel, north and south aisles and clerestory, north vestry, and south-west Chapel. The church is built in flint and stone with some checker work. The tower has an embattled parapet with crocketted pinnacles, the octagonal tower Lantern was added in the 19th century. The east end of the nave has a small Sanctus bellcote on the roof. The nave has north and south aisles of four bays with further bays for the north Chapel. The clerestory was added in the 15th century. There is a fine 15th century hammerbeam roof with carved Angels and original colouring. In the chancel, there is a 19th-century reredos with a painting of "The raising of Lazarus". The east window has glass by De la Roche of Paris, 1844. The pulpit is octagonal, with tester from 1636, and there is a 14th century piscina in the north east Chapel. There are several brasses in the church, however these are covered by carpet. The interior of the church has been whitewashed, including the coved chancel ceiling. There is a small two manual organ which was installed in 1990.
