Very disappointing stay. I would not return.
We’re a family of four (two adults, two preteens), and we’ve stayed at Riu resorts before, including Riu Cancun, and had great experiences. This trip, however, to Riu Puerto Vallarta was extremely disappointing.
We arrived late at night traveling from Vancouver. We had called the hotel twice in advance to confirm our late arrival and to make sure our room would be held. At check-in, the staff member casually acknowledged the notes saying we had called, but then told us they hadn’t held the room. We waited about 30 minutes while they tried to “find something,” and eventually we were given a very small room with one king bed and told that the four of us could sleep in it. We were honestly shocked that this was even suggested.
They added one extra bed the first night and another on the second night, but the room became so cramped that we literally had to climb over beds to move around. This is not what we expected, especially for a trip we planned months in advance.
Food was also disappointing. While there was plenty available, the overall quality was average at best, and the red meat, in particular, was very poor quality.
Considering we paid about $800 per night, this was by far the worst resort experience we’ve had. I’m sharing this so others are aware and can rethink before booking. I will add photos if possible.
