The house was ramshackle and pieced-together. It was dirty. Dresser drawers sandy, shower soap-scummy, fingerprints on kitchen appliances, gritty floor. When we arrived, neither the internet nor TV worked. The bed broke. The approach to the house was dangerous. In fact, I have a story about that if you care to read on. We arrived in the dark. We drove up Topanga Canyon Road following Siri’s instructions on my i-phone Google Maps app. We turned onto Robinson Road and at last Siri said, “Turn right, here.” But we missed the turn. We drove further until we found a place to make a dangerous u–turn. We went back until the “Turn right, here” command came again. Still, we couldn’t see a road to turn to; there was just the sheer cliffside. I pulled over to the side of the road, and climbed out to peer over the edge of the canyon. In the dark, I could barely see a primitive road sink down-hill between two trees. There were 2 reflectors on a slim post to mark it. I climbed back into the car and passed between the two trees with my heart in my throat because the road was so steep I couldn’t see it over the hood of my car. It felt like I was driving off the edge of a precipice. I managed to stay on the road, and we passed over a narrow bridge without guardrails to an undefined area (gravel and brush) surrounded by derelict cars and an old boat. We weren’t sure where to park.I should have understood a clue from the beginning. My instructions from host had been: “
