The North Norfolk Line from the North side of the cutting The large cutting here is one of the larger engineering hurdles on the line. Although there is only sand and gravel to dig it must have been a big job. I would imagine the cutting material went to built the large embankment that takes the line to Weybourne. Heather and Gorse can be seen, the sandy soils making Kelling Heath famous for rare plants and animals. This is where Michael Palin first saw the sea, from the train window when the line was still open. Please Note this photo was taken on railway property, I was in possession of a line side pass issued by the railway. Going on the line side without one is trespassing.

Flowering shrubs. Kelling Heath in mid April. The heath is criss-crossed by a network of paths and bridleways including a nature trail and the North Norfolk Railway's smallest 'station' is located here > 1249651. Salthouse Heath has some of the largest barrow groups in this part of England. In mid-April the gorse is flowering profusely. "When gorse is out of blossom, kissing is out of fashion", according to an old country tradition. Gorse flowers all year round, although most profusely in spring and the flowers have a distinctive and strong coconut scent. Other common names for gorse are furse, whin and furze. The shrub is a member of the pea family (Fabaceae) and native to western Europe and northwest Africa. It is closely related to the brooms, has green stems with small spiny leaves, and grows in sunny sites on dry, sandy soils. Gorse

I am afraid the experience was like 30 years ago. The rooms are clean but very dated. New bathroom though. Biggest issue was heating. We arrived at 3pm to a cold room. They had to change the heating timer for the whole hotel to warm our room … or so we were told. Later at 8-9 in the evening when ...
