Former racecourse grandstand Adjacent to Strawberry Lane the remains with the course area beyond. Shincliffe Racecourse opened in 1895 and was closed by the start of the First World War.

Shincliffe Hall Keys to the Past Web Site: Shincliffe Hall was built as a house in about 1771, though it is now occupied by Durham University Graduates. SHINCLIFFE HALL LANE NZ 2840 (South end, off) 13/89 Shincliffe Hall GV II House, now occupied by Durham University Graduates' Society. Circa 1771 for William Rudd, with C20 alterations. Narrow brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings. Main block has graduated stone tiles on roof; wing has Welsh slate roof. Old brick chimney stacks. Double-span main block with contemporary wing set corner-to-corner on right rear. 2-storey, 3-bay garden front has band between storeys and replaced sashes with projecting stone sills and segmental brick heads. Late C20 addition on ground- floor right bay. Steeply-pitched 2-span roof with stone-coped gable parapets and shaped kneelers. Tumbled-in brickwork on gables. Twin-gabled returns: 2-storey canted brick bay, with replaced sashes and hipped roof, on left return of front range; some 12-pane sashes on left return of rear range; 2-storey late C19 lean-to addition on right return. Tripartite sash window and early C20 glazed octagonal porch on rear of main block. 3-bay wing, of 2 storeys and attics,has mainly replaced sashes, some in altered openings,and a catslide roof with transverse end stacks. Lower 2-storey rear facing courtyard. Interior: main block contains cut-string, open-well staircase, of 3 flights plus landing rail, with 2 turned balusters per tread and a ramped and wreathed handrail. Staircase hall has modillion cornice. 6-panel doors in architraves with panelled reveals. Late C20 flat-roofed addition on right ground-floor bay of garden front is not of interest.

Travelled with my daughter and her two boys love this hotel been back twice now loved the gym the pool the sauna coming back in march the food was expensive though and we ate out lovely beautifull hotel would highly recomend well done Delta Hotel

Durham

Church of Christ the King, Bowburn. Oliver Dixon writes at Geograph: "Built in 1976, this striking futuristic church stood in the former mining village of Bowburn. Unfortunately, it suffered serious design faults and was closed in September 2004. At the time of photography the building was in a sorry state with the roof in a poor state of repair, and the whole premises fortified like Fort Knox against vandals. The building was demolished in May 2007, just leaving the cross standing." Update taken from the website www.christthekingchurch.co.uk The Church of Christ the King is the Parish Church (C of E) serving the three villages of Bowburn, Cassop and Quarrington Hill with members of the congregation drawn from all three villages and beyond. A new multi purpose church building and hall was dedicated, after enormous efforts from the congregation, in September 2008, on the site of the old building (once famous in the area as 'the pineapple church'). Worship is in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England within which all are welcome and made to feel at home. The Bishop of Beverley (the Provincial Episcopal Visitor for the Northern Province), the Rt. Revd. Glyn Webster has pastoral and sacramental care of the parish, which is in the Diocese of Durham. The celebration of the Mass (Eucharist or Holy Communion) is at the centre of the parish's worshipping life both on Sundays and in the week. Morning or Evening Prayer is also said daily (Mondays excepted) by the parish priest with others and all are welcome to join in. During the Sunday Mass a small but active Sunday School meets in the hall. On Thursday evenings our parish branch of the Church Lads and Church Girls Brigade, a uniformed organisation for young people aged 5 and upwards, meets in the Church Hall. There is a very active programme of social and fundraising events: fairs, quizzes, suppers etc., normally once a month at which all are welcome. The church hall is available for hire for one off or regular functions normally at £11 per hour. Bookings for Baptisms, Marriages, Banns etc. can normally be made at church on a FRIDAY 5.30PM-6PM. Full details of weekly services, socials and special events can be found on the weekly news sheet or on the notice board outside church.
