Our stay at the Courtyard by Marriott in Carolina Beach was disappointing, especially for the price. We were in town for a funeral, so comfort and ease were especially important.
The room was very basic and clearly worn. The mini fridge was hidden behind a cabinet door that looked rough, and there was no microwave in the room. Having to go to the market/ice area to use one was inconvenient.
The bathroom was a major issue. Running the shower or bath was extremely loud but had very little water pressure. The water also had a strange smell, almost like well water, and appeared slightly tinted.
The walls are extremely thin. We could hear full conversations from one neighbor and every sound—showers, toilets, even the shower curtain—from the other. If you have children, I strongly recommend requesting a secluded room.
We stayed four nights with our children and never complained, but on the last night we received a complaint about our “loud children,” who were simply eating ice cream they bought from the hotel market after the pool closed early for maintenance. Given how loud the plumbing is and how thin the walls are, this felt unreasonable.
Laundry facilities were also inconvenient, with two washers and only one dryer on a different floor.
Overall, I would not recommend this hotel for long stays, especially for families. The condition, noise issues, and lack of comfort did not justify the cost.
