Cozy 2/1.5 Getaway in Lily Ponds

  • Take it easy at our Polk Street Suites, a unique and tranquil space. A 2-level row house, 2 bedrooms, 1 full and 1 half bathroom getaway. Whether on a quick business trip, staycation or vacation, you are right at home with all the necessary amenities. It comfortably sleeps 4-6 guests. The Master Suite contains a queen-sized bed. Suite 2 contains a full-sized bed. The main level has a full sized futon. The property features a fully stocked gourmet style kitchen with stainless steel appliances.

    Lily Ponds is a neighborhood in NE DC, east of the Anacostia river, bounded by Kenilworth Avenue on the east side, East Capitol Street on the south, Anacostia Avenue on the west, and Benning Road on the north. Lily Ponds feels very insulated from it’s immediate neighbors due to being between the freeway and the river, and the neighborhood is quiet and pleasant and features a large green park on the eastern end with a bike trail and playground. Prices are on the rise in Lily Ponds due to the proximity to Capitol Hill and the east end of the H Street Trolley, but buyers can still get a nice front porch brick townhouse for under $400,000. Pets are welcome at $25/pet/night.

Comfortable, clean and quiet

The house was clean, comfortable, centrally located and well stocked with items we needed. I will certainly recommend it to others, and use it myself again.

Graduation Week

We stayed at this property because we were going to be in DC for our daughters graduation from Howard University! The home was exactly as the online photos. It was nice and clean. We had an enjoyable stay. We will be returning to DC in the future and will surely use this host again!!!!

Nice home, quiet neighborhood.

This is a well maintained home. The beds are comfortable. The windows let in a lot of natural light , which makes the home feel bright and open. The listing pictures are accurate. The area is quiet,, yet close to major thoroughfares.

When we arrived promptly at the start of our reservation time either a cleaner or the owner of the property was still there. Laundry was not done but we told them we would happily take care of it. Then we noticed the dishwasher was running shortly after we arrived that had ALL the silverware and things we needed to cook dinner (they also did not have a cooking sheet so we had to cook with a pasta stove bowl in the oven). The floorboards on the main floor were coming up (they had a bathroom mat over one in the living room to try and hide it). The floors themselves did not feel clean as my socks were dark on the bottom shortly after we arrived. The bathroom light upstairs barely worked, was flashing the entire time AND changed brightness based on the when the sink was turned on and off. We were only really there to sleep and eat which the beds were comfortable but there is a lot of things this property needs to fix.

A Day Stay

While on vacation in VA, we decided to take the family to visit the National Mall for the day. After hanging out all day we arrived at the house before dark. For the most part the neighborhood was quiet. The backyard was not enclosed. This means if you’re standing or have your children playing in the backyard, understand that anyone can walk up without any restriction.

Safe and comfortable

Communication with manager excellent. Accurate info & stayed in contact. We are 70+, have 6 lb chihuahua so safety of place, convenient parking and yard in back, long, narrow fenced 2 sides worked well for dog. Location close to wife's relative, 6 miles, so good location for us. Neighborhood felt safe, minimal traffic/noise. Place was clean, furnishings minimal but OK. Take these comments in context to our age and some health issues: - stairs to upper floor narrow & a good climb to get up to full bath. -no lamps, all lighting in ceilings so good have been better given our older eyes but sufficient. furniture in sitting area OK but no arms and not that comfortable. The most important answer, would we stay there again? Absolutely yes!

Broadly speaking, with VRBO's I'm looking for one of two things. An amazing place to stay where I will spend lots of time and gain a lot of enjoyment from the stay itself, or a place I can sleep at night with little/no fear of getting knifed on the way to the things I'm really looking forward to doing on the trip. This was definitely the latter. The neighborhood is quiet. There is street parking, and I think we could have parked out back too if we wanted. No issues with neighbors.The home is easily within walking distance to the orange line if you're heading to touristy places like the mall. Walk via skybridge to Deanwood station. I recommend getting off at Capitol South station for the mall. That puts you at the far eastern edge. You can start with the supreme court and library of congress then just start heading west. Parking is a nightmare in this city. Stick to the trains if you can.The good: all the appliances work, the beds were very hard but strangely comfortable, the kitchen was actually well laid out with the island, and the neighborhood was very quiet.The bad: there was some kind of water damage that can be seen along baseboards, the floor was not level, the floorboards were warped to the point there were gaps in the floor, and the upstairs was very noisy to walk around on.I gave it five stars for being what it is. If you are looking for a cheap place to stay while you visit the capital, this is a good option.

The location of this place is fantastic. Only 15 minutes into DC, which was great since we were going into town every day during our stay. Unfortunately, the apartment itself was not great. The pictures do not reflect the current condition. The two barstools at the kitchen island are torn up quite badly. Aside from 2 very large pictures in the living room, there’s virtually no decor on the walls or anything to make it homey. No curtains. The light in the upstairs bathroom is so dim its only use is as a nightlight. When we arrived, the dishwasher was full (The dishes were clean, it had never been emptied), the towel in the downstairs bathroom had obvious dirt on it, and the mirror was not clean. There were no hangers in the closets, the kitchen doesn’t have measuring cups or spoons, though it did have a few spices in the cupboard which we appreciated. The two frying pans they had looked brand new, but one didn’t even have the handle attached to it, which was so odd. Also, the pans are nonstick, and all of the cooking utensils were stainless steel, which means they’re gonna scratch the coating on the pans. There was enough silverware for four of us to have one meal, and then we had to start washing. there is no dining room table, so 2 of us sat at the island, the other 2 on the sofa. The owner cleaned the mirror, brought hangers, clean towels, and put the handle on the frying pan. But this place needs some thought and attention to make it as nice as it looked in the pics.

Ok, but lots of room for improvement

House was not located within the 4 streets listed on the website, but overall the neighborhood was quiet and seemed safe. Walking distance to metro, which was very convenient. House had a musty smell and on our 4th day we had maggots all over the downstairs floor! The dishwasher was full of dirty dishes when we arrived, or it may have been run, but there were still eggs stuck on the pans. Outside was overgrown, but someone came to mow the lawn during our stay. On that day we were quite upset when we arrived back from exploring the city and found someone had entered the inside of the property as there was dirt all over the floor and no communication from the host about anyone having access to the house.

Cute, photos a bit misleading

Apartment had basic necessities, but was lacking in some areas. There was laundry to finish from the cleaning crew when we checked in, the water in the shower was warm, not hot, barely enough to not freeze, the kitchen sink has a leak with a bowl under to catch the water, two microwaves no toaster, living room futon (the only furniture in the living room) and mattresses need to be replaced (very worn, very uncomfortable, very used, almost icky), the strobe light in the bathroom when the shower was running made it feel like a rave, when the light actually did come on. The neighborhood cats were pleasant enough and greeted us each morning. The neighborhood was quiet and close to the freeway, and we were there to see the city. The roof didn't leak, there was central air, and plenty of parking on the street right in front. The ice maker on the fridge worked, as well as the water dispenser. The price per night was within our budget, and we made the best out of it.

Charming Home with Great Accessibility, but Clunky Floors

The neighborhood is pretty cool and easily accessible to the metro and shopping centers. When it comes to the house, it is neat and clean. However, when we arrived, there was still unfinished laundry in the washer. As my OCD kicked in, I couldn’t help but finish it by putting it in the dryer, folding it, and placing it in a drawer.The mattress is extremely hard and uncomfortable to sleep on, and I woke up with a terrible headache in the morning.The most frustrating issue was the floor. It makes a loud, clunky noise whenever someone walks around the house. If you’re a light sleeper like me, it’s disturbing. While you’re upstairs in your room, you can clearly hear people walking downstairs. The landlord must address this issue with the flooring.Other than that, the house is perfectly cute.

Poorly Represented

To begin, I submitted a request for an early check-in. However, when my grandchildren and I arrived, the host was still present and cleaning. The host claimed that I had not responded to the early check-in query, yet the payment had already been deducted from my account. Upon further review, the only email I received was a receipt of my purchase, with no question to be answered. Secondly, the condition of the house was not satisfactory. There were numerous holes and gaps in the floor, large enough to fit a flat hand, where it connects to the wall. Upon our arrival, there were still stained towels in the bathroom. The dressers in the bedrooms were not level and were wobbly. Additionally, the top drawer of the dresser in the room next to the bathroom was not attached and could be completely removed. Finally, the bathroom had significant issues. The water and lights in the bathroom seemed to be connected somehow. When the sink or shower was turned on, or the toilet was flushed, the light would dim, and it would return to normal when the sink or shower was turned off. For a place where I spent a considerable amount of money, this was not at all what I deserved.
