Premium Price – Not the Premium Stay Advertised
We booked a two-night stay in a Lake View room at Rutland Hall to celebrate our 17th wedding anniversary. Reviews were largely positive and the photos looked impressive, so expectations were high — unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to the premium pricing.
Pros:
The location is undeniably beautiful, right next to Rutland Reservoir, and the staff we encountered were pleasant and polite.
Cons:
Our room was not in the main hall but in a separate block that felt more like student accommodation or serviced flats than a hotel. This isn’t shown in the photos. The communal entrance smelled damp and mouldy, and the room itself had poor ventilation, resulting in heavy condensation on the patio doors overnight.
While the room was advertised as a lake view, only part of the view overlooked the water, with the rest blocked by the back of the main building. Maintenance issues were evident: a leaking hot tap that had already stained the sink, a broken shower head that couldn’t be adjusted, peeling paint on the door, and a kettle with mould stains inside that remained even after boiling.
The shower was over a bath, which could be difficult for anyone with limited mobility. A coffee machine was provided, but the unbranded, cheap-looking pods gave no indication of what coffee you were drinking. There was also no fridge. No acknowledgement of our anniversary — not expected, but for £240+ per night in January. Would not book again.
