*Muskie & Pickeral Fishing at Shady Point on Upper Buckhorn Lake.*
The following has been printed from The Niagara Musky Association Inc. catch and release Newsletter. “ Tom Page, Jeff Rudnick, Joe Zolnowski and Tomy Scime spent October 5th to l0th chasing muskies at Buckhorn Lake.
Fishing season opening and closing dates vary depending on the species and the area. It is illegal to attempt to catch fish for which the season is closed, even if you are going to release them. Fish accidentally caught during the closed season must be immediately released back into the water. Closed seasons protect fish at vulnerable times of the year, especially when they are spawning or protecting their young.
We stayed at Shady Point Resort. Tom and Jeff won a week’s free lodging thanks to Shady Point’s donation to our banquet raffle. We had a great time. It was fun to catch fish every day. The fist fought very hard and was very acrobatic. A lot of fun to catch. There are some big ones there, along with a lot of smaller fish that make for some great action. Hope to return. I would recommend it to anyone.
Total muskie hooked – 41
Total muskie boated – 29
Tony – ll (largest 42)
Jeff – 8 (largest 45)
Joe – 6 largest (43.5)
Tom – 4 (largest 39.5)
Please refer to the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary to determine the open season dates for waterbodies in the zone in which you will be fishing. Unless stated otherwise, species that are not listed (such as sucker and rock bass) have a year-round open season.
The chain of lakes on which Shady Point Resort is located comprises Upper Buckhorn Lake, Upper Chemong Lake, Pigeon Lake, Big & Little Bald Lakes. We have over 1700 feet of shoreline at Shady Point Resort.
Buckhorn Lake is well known for its excellent fishing whether it is crappie, carp, perch. blue gill, large and smallmouth bass, walleye or the king of them all the fighting muskie you will find them here. And for our European friends we have some very large and abundant Common Carp which average 25lbs with some weighing in at around 40lbs.
Over the last many years the fishing on Buckhorn Lake and the Tri-Lakes has been getting better and better. 2014 was no exception and was the best year for us with Bass , Walleye and Muskie. In 2014 we had many successes in our fishing tournaments with 3 first place finishes, 1 second place and 2 thirds, with our best winning the Bridgenorth Bassmasters Classic with a weight of 20.54/lbs (5 bass).
The walleye seen many fish in the 3-6/lbs class throughout the year; it is evidence that the slot limit on walleye is certainly doing its job and increasing the walleye population in the lake. As for the muskie, we seen many catches between 36” – 48” with two 48 inch fish finishing out the year in early November caught while fishing for smallmouth bass on 8/lbs test drop shotting, both fish were between 18-20/lbs. Our largest fish in 2014 seen a smallmouth bass hitting the scales at 6.03/lbs, largemouth bass at 5.46/lbs, walleye at 6.10/lbs and 2 muskie that hit 18-20/lbs.
