Portugal's highest mountain! Mt. Pico in Azores Islandsl! Pico Island was my last day in the Azores and it was my only day there. A great way to end my March 2019 trip. This majestic volcano is 2,351 m (7,713 ft) above sea level, and is one of the highest Atlantic mountains; it is more than twice the elevation of any other peak in the Azores. And there are breathtaking views from all across the small volcanic island. I got many good shots of it, including this one.

I took a tour around some parts of the island, before flying out of the Azores that day. It was a really great way to end this trip! And this being one of the best spots to see the volcano. It's an idyllic lake view! There was even some birds in the water :). Also, Pico doesn't have nearly as many tourists as the main Azores island. Which makes this all the more peaceful. And in the tradition of the Portuguese poet, Raul Brandão, Pico is referred to as the Ilha Preta ("Black Island"), for its black volcanic earth, responsible for its UNESCO-designated historical vineyards that allowed the development of the island. If anyone goes to the Azores I really recommend a stay on Pico!

«I stayed in this apartment with my family of 4. The apartment itself was small but ok. Note that the management keeps the remote control for AC and if you need it, they charge a daily fee of 10EUR per day. The communication with the manager has been very difficult since the beginning. I’ve sent a message a month prior to arrival to confirm there was enough room for the 4 of us. I never got any answers. The day before our arrival, I sent another message that was again unanswered. «The basic necessities are provided; beds are comfortable and the place is clean. Need to Whatsapp owner to get information to get onto the property because messaging in Portugese otherwise. Property said air conditioning but the air conditioning was broken. It was cool enough though so not a problem. Walkable to the ocean and natural pool and nice restaurant down the street.
