Ludere Coonawarra blends heritage character with modern comfort. Three bedrooms feature king beds, and a queen sofa bed offers extra flexibility for larger groups. The fully provisioned kitchen has everything you need to cook and entertain, and on cooler evenings the fireplace makes the living area the perfect spot to open a bottle of local Cabernet.

Penola and the Coonawarra wine region

Ludere Coonawarra is right in the centre of Penola, with the town’s cafes, restaurants and historic streets just a short stroll away, including the Royal Oak hotel just up the road. Penola is one of South Australia’s most charming heritage towns, home to the historic cottages of Petticoat Lane and the Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre.

Just a few minutes’ drive north, the Coonawarra wine region is famous for its terra rossa soil and exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, with dozens of cellar doors along a short stretch of road. It’s one of the easiest wine regions in Australia to explore, and we’re always happy to share our favourite cellar doors and restaurants.

Getting here

Penola is about four and a half hours’ drive from Adelaide and around five hours from Melbourne, making it an ideal weekend or midweek escape. Mount Gambier airport is about 40 minutes away.
