Playin Hooky!
Our group had a great time at Oak Island. The house is very cute, and clean. The front porch is an absolute gem. It’s a little far from the beach (not walking distance) but that did not bother us at all. Love the house and would book again.

Just ok for us
Let me start with what we did not like. Cleanliness was not up to our standards. Tub looked like it hadn't been cleaned at all as there were hairs left in it. The plates and glasses had to be washed before we could use them, and the table on the covered front porch was black with soot when we went to wipe it down. This one is on me as I didn't notice that the "fully equipped kitchen" lacked a dish washing machine and it wasn't a big deal, but it might explain those not so clean dishes. Some of the towels were past replacing by a few months and there was just a single hotel-sized pack of shampoo and conditioner. My wife used it up in one shower after the day at the beach (not easy to wash out the salt if you have long hair). Now, the good part is the location, it is a 5 minute drive to the beach and about a 20 minute walk. The covered porch is huge and we really enjoyed it, once we cleaned up a bit. Beds are comfortable if not new or newer and house is nicely decorated. One thing I forgot to mention to the owner was that the smoke alarm would go off when we were warming up the oven, although there was no visible or "smellable" smoke. Owner gave us good instructions and invited us to let her know if there were any issues and we would have if we thought they could have been fixed quickly and without disrupting our vacation further.

Our stay
We loved this house. There was enough room for my kids and husband, and I. It was clean, there were beach chairs to take down to the beach, which was great. We enjoyed it and will definitely being coming back and using Vrbo again.

Relaxing Get-away
We had an awesome, relaxing week and Patti was more than just a owner/host, she was always available to answer any questions and told us of several places in the area to go for dinner or site-seeing. The house is very close to the beach and the grocery store. It was clean and added touches by Patti made it feel like we were at friends house instead of just a rental house. We will definitely stay here again the next time we go to Oak Island.

Playin Hooky was a great escape
This was a great rental. Literally 5 mins from the main strip and the beach. It was clean and accommodating even for a blended family with all age kids. I really liked how Patti had a charging station in the house for guest use. She was very nice and understanding when my youngest decided to run up the neighbors stairs. Thanks again Pattie, we will be back soon!

Great Family Vaca
My husband and I brought our 2 & 3 year old to the beach for a short weekend trip. The house was just a 3 minute drive to the beach. We absolutely loved the screened in front porch(that also had a high latch to make sure the kids didn't escape)!

Great location
Patti is an exceptional host. Very easy to rent from. It’s a charming cute house everything you could need. It was great for our family. My daughter loved the art work all the shells and knickknacks in the house. She spent a lot of time on the awesome screened in porch. It’s in an fantastic location. Very close to the beach. Very close to grocery stores and beach merchandise.

Perfect Family Get Away
We lucked into this rental during a particularly busy booking season. The house was absolutely perfect for my siblings and I, and just a 2 minute drive to the beach, with ample public parking, and we couldn't have asked for a better host!

Couldn’t ask for more!
Our Oak Island rental at Playin’ Hook-y was wonderful. We stayed for 3 months and felt right at home. The house was very clean & well stocked. If we needed anything, Patti responded immediately. And I mean immediately! We were allowed to bring our dogs which wasn’t an option and they loved walking in the neighborhood. Neighbors were friendly. Would definitely recommend Playin’ Hook-y!

Oak Island Getaway
Great value for the price!! Safe neighborhood and clean cottage. House was well stocked with supplies - even some condiments and books. Very prompt response from owner. Would definitely stay again. Only negative was the walk to beach was longer than I expected, so we drove and had no trouble finding parking.

Playing Hooky was a great little beach getaway. It was easy to walk to intercostal and beach. Easy walk or bike ride to beach, restaurants and shops. We enjoyed the outdoor shower and large screened in porch.

Very Pleasant Home
The home had some surprising features. But first it was as advertised. We wanted a single family home in a nice neighborhood. It was all of that. I was surprised by how roomy the master was. Plenty of storage. Kitchen had enough counter space. Nicely furnished. My only suggestion would be extra towels. I have long hair and use 2 large towels. I'm sure just mentioning that would fix it. Thanks Patti for a memorable vacation.

This cottage was nice and clean upon our arrival. Patti was gracious enough to let us check in early since it was ready. Our favorite area was the screened in front porch, where we ended up spending a vast majority of time because we had rain nearly every day we were there. We did get some beach time, but not near as much as we had hoped. We've been to OKI numerous times and are drawn back time and again because of the laid back atmosphere and not overcrowding. There were some things that were lacking, but they weren't major issues. The kitchen could use more items, such as ice trays, a pitcher, covered casserole and an electric can opener. We improvised as best we could. The charcoal grill was extremely small and quite dirty, but we used it after cleaning it. It would have been nice to have a larger grill. Lastly, there were no instructions for operating the TV. We finally figured it out the second day! All in all, this place was pretty nice for the price. Patti was very easy to work with.

Great, dog-friendly space!
We loved our stay at Playin’ Hooky! The space was clean and tidy, in a nice, quiet area. We absolutely loved the front screen in porch -perfect for listening to the storms roll in in the evenings! The back yard has a nice outdoor shower, picnic table, and fire pit. Our dogs absolutely loved lounging on the porch watching people walk by. We can’t wait to return!

Comfy Place for a Getaway or Extended Stay
This house is in a great location to all that Oak Island has to offer! Since my husband and I were looking for temporary housing and not a vacation spot, we were very pleased that “Playin’ Hook-y” provided much more than just a place to stay. It is in a quiet neighborhood that is perfect for walks or runs and long walks with a dog . The Intercoastal Waterway is less than a block away, and the beach is an easy 15-minute walk or short drive away. It is also close to shopping and great restaurants! (Patti provides a binder that contains information about her favorite places!) My husband and I, along with our dog, stayed here for six weeks, so we appreciated that it was clean, comfortable, and well-equipped for everyday living, including Wi-Fi and Roku TV. Patti was very attentive to our needs and was quick to respond to weather-related problems. We were just sorry that the weather was not conducive for us to enjoy the wonderful screened-in porch!!! Thank you for everything, Patti!

Perfect Two Day Getaway!
I stayed here on a Wednesday and Thursday night leaving Friday morning. Setting up the reservation was a breeze and Patti made it easy for us to get in without any hassle, and getting into the house was straightforward. The house is quaint with a queen bed in the master bedroom, along with two other bedrooms, one with a bunkbed, and one with two twins. You can bring your own linen and towels and save money! Being on the Sound-side or the Intercoastal waterway side of the island, the house has a reclusive and private feel without any traffic noise whatsoever. It's just a short two minute ride to really easy beach access on the ocean side. This was my first trip to Oak Island, and I was pleased with the expansive, quiet beaches for this time of year. The weather was awesome, in the upper 80's and 90's in September! The house is equipped with everything you need for any length stay. The kitchen is fully equipped if you want to cook, and there's a washer and dryer. The entertainment system consists of cable TV with a Roku setup which enables you to access Netflix, etc in a nice cosy living room space. There's plenty of room outside for eating and relaxing with a fully screened-in front porch that runs the whole length of the house and a large back deck with table and chairs. Although we didn't meet, Patti was very sweet and available, and has done a great job of making her beach home a perfect place for a quiet, relaxing getaway. We had a great time.

Good location!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Playin' Hook-y! The location of the house is convenient! We walked to the beach (15 minutes) and to shops nearby. It was near all the action, but far enough away that you didn't feel like you were! Best of both worlds! It was great to be able to hang out on the front porch as well! The kitchen was stocked enough to eat some of our meals in. We had six in the house and it didn't feel too crowded.

We aren't great at spontaneity!
We are planners, 100%. When we received a last minute invite to join some family in Oak Island for half the week, we threw caution to the wind. We were lucky enough to fine Playin Hook-y was still available, and without the week-long requirement. The owner, Patti, could not have been more communicative both in the lead up to our arrival, but during the entire process. The house was extremely clean and well stocked. It was everything the description, and more. We definitely plan on returning to Playin Hook-y and Oak Island again very soon! ~Josh and Sara Dahl

Great location, awesome porch!!
You can not beat the porch on this house. It's what you want at the beach. Great location, we walked to the sound and the nature park. A short drive to the beach access. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.
