• The Space:
Obra Prima means masterpiece in Portuguese. At Villa Obra Prima, that means:

• Entrance
- Whether entering from the garage or from the secure gate to the exterior of property, the entrance provides a grand, but warm welcome, setting the tone for the spaces that will unfold from it. Floor to ceiling windows frame a picturesque view of the local landscape, while the facing wall features a large artwork commissioned specifically for the villa from Portuguese textile artist, Maria Pratas, as a representation of Madeira Island. Naturally, you’ll also find a bench to change your shoes, and a console with resources to supplement your vacation.
• Open Plan Kitchen/Dining/Living Space:
- With massive floor-to-ceiling windows and glass sliding doors offering unbeatable panoramic views of Funchal and the sea, this room was designed to bring the outdoors in. A baby grand piano is the centerpiece of the space, though music lovers will also appreciate the handmade braguinha (Madeiran ukulele) and karaoke machine. Several pieces of local art adorn the walls, including a portrait of a Madeiran field worker by local artist, Emanuel Aguiar. The dining area is defined by a vintage Moroccan rug, paying homage to Madeira’s closest neighbor, with a table that comfortably seats eight. A well-appointed kitchen allows you to cook as much or as little as you desire, perhaps enjoying fresh local produce purchased at the famous Mercado dos Lavadores ten minutes away. From the kitchen island, you’re part of the action, and can even keep an eye on kids swimming in the pool outside. In the living area, stream your favorite shows, play games, make music, or cozy up with a book around the suspended fireplace. You are sure to find many peaceful moments and make lasting memories with friends and family.
• Laundry:
- A separate laundry room fully equipped with washer/dryer, iron, etc.
• Social Bathroom:
- This full bathroom with shower featuring rainfall shower head is conveniently located behind the main social space, and on the same level as the pool.
• Office:
- If this is partly a working vacation, you will appreciate this private office with ample desk space.
Perfect for zoom meetings, with the villa’s high speed Internet access.
• Games Room:
- A great spot for the younger set to get away to watch tv or play games, or for parents to spend quiet time with children. In addition to a tv with gaming console, floor table, futon, and board games, the space features a collection of original paintings by Madeiran illustrator Rafaella Rodrigues, all commissioned specifically for the villa, and depicting iconic scenes from the island. Have fun seeing how many of the scenes you recognize. By the end of your vacation, we think you will recognize most of them.
• Outdoors:
- The 30-square meter saltwater infinity pool (heated on request at additional charge) defines the outdoor space. Saltwater is perfect for soothing muscles and joints after a day of activity, but you may also enjoy entire days in and around the pool with its spectacular views that turn magical at night. The terrace features sun beds for everyone, as well as designer teak furnishings in the lounge and dining areas. Enjoy cocktails in the lounge area, and dine al fresco at the generously-sized dining table. If you don’t feel like cooking, have food delivered from one of the many delicious Madeiran or international restaurants that deliver to homes in Funchal.
With a small banana plantation and vineyard directly beyond the property, you’ll enjoy increased privacy, and immediate views of local agriculture within the grandiosity of Funchal’s ampitheater.
• Primary Suite:
- You will sleep peacefully in the locally created custom king-size bed. Floor to ceiling sliding glass
doors give way to the balcony that spans the entire back of the house, overlooking the terrace,
Funchal, and the sea beyond. Another Moroccan handmade carpet caresses bare feet. Two
closets offer plenty of space for your clothes, and convenient storage for suitcases. In the
bathroom, double sinks, rainfall shower head, and bidet add to the luxury.
• Second Suite:
- Similar to the primary suite, this room also contains a king-size bed, and offers floor to ceiling sliding glass doors to access the balcony, with panoramic views. A well-designed closet will store your clothes and keep clutter away. The private bathroom offers plenty of storage, and luxurious shower with rainfall shower head.
• Third Suite:
- This bedroom can be configured at your request with two single beds or as a king-size. Another well-appointed closet to stow your clothing and other belongings. This room overlooks the side yard, and has its own small balcony. The private bathroom offers plenty of storage, and luxurious shower with rainfall shower head.
• Location:
- The villa is ideally situated on an easy-to-drive road with the terrace in back to ensure privacy.
By car, the villa is 20 minutes from the airport, ten minutes to the Old Town, and five minutes to the mall, your one-stop for everything from groceries, to a post office, movie theater, and even an Apple store. Walk to the café a few doors down for bolo to caco and other local dishes, or walk a few minutes in the other direction to reach the bakery or grocery store, perhaps grazing on wild raspberries at the side of the road as you go, in season.
Conveniently located in the in the hills of Funchal, minutes from the old town, and to the expressways that will take you deep into Madeira’s wild landscapes, Villa Obra Prima is the perfect base for your Madeiran vacation. Whether that means hiking in the mountains, swimming in the ocean and natural pools, sledding in a wicker basket on the hills of Monte, snorkeling, whale-watching, boating, paragliding, golfing, shopping for local treasures, dining at typical or Michelin star restaurants… or simply relaxing on the terrace around the pool. Even if you never leave the property, you will have a fulfilling holiday enjoying the villa’s many amenities, but also taking in the atmosphere of the real Funchal, with its small farms, occasional folk music, bleating sheep, dogs in conversation with each other, and other sounds of local life that waft through the ampitheater, but above all… mesmerizing views.
