You are not near the water. You are on it.

One hundred feet of private shoreline on Long Pond, west facing, which is the part most people do not think about until they are standing there at 8:30 at night watching the whole sky go orange across the water. East-side camps get the sunrise. We get the show.

Three bedrooms, two baths, both on the main floor. Open living space that looks out at the pond, a full kitchen, and a new grill on the deck with stairs down to the backyard and the lake.

Off the dining room and the fireplace there is a sunroom that doubles as an office, for reading or getting an hour of work done before the fun starts.

The lake is yours and so is everything that goes on it. Kayaks, a canoe, paddle boards, and fishing gear, all already here. Nobody is renting you a boat by the hour or hustling wristbands. You walk down, push off, and come back when you are hungry.

The fishing is fantastic. You can fish right off the dock, though the bottom there is rocky, so choose your rigs accordingly.

Downstairs is the game room, Maine camp style. A new poker table, a pile of board games, a BOSE CD player that has earned its keep, and room to spread out, watch TV, or let the kids run a video game tournament. The laundry is down there too, with its own door straight out to the backyard and the lake. The house mechanicals share the space, so it is a game room and not a showroom, and it is where everybody ends up when it rains.

Parking for three vehicles. Although, vehicles, who needs them?

Belgrade Lakes village is right there. The general store, the ice cream, dinner on the water. Belgrade Lakes Golf Club is a short walk if that is your thing.

If you must drive, the state capital is 20 minutes, and the coast or the best skiing in Maine is 90.

Fair warning on two things. The well runs through a treatment system, so drink it and cook with it, but please do not leave a hose running for days. And the septic is the quiet hero of every Maine camp. Down the drain goes water, soap, and what came out of you. Everything else goes in the trash.

We bought this place to keep in the family for generations.
