MAIN ATTRACTIONS

Lagoa Azul and Lagoa do Peixe (near Barreirinhas): The access is usually done by 4x4 vehicles and takes around 30 to 50 minutes of trail and dunes from the entrance of the park in Barreirinhas.

Other lagoons of the Blue/Beautiful Lagoon Circuit: The travel time between the lagoons within the circuit may vary, but usually the tours last a few hours in total.

Atins (access from the mouth of the Preguiças River): The boat trip from Barreirinhas to Atins takes about 1 to 1h30, depending on the tide and the type of vessel. From Atins, you can also access several lagoons and dunes.

Crossing of the Lençóis (for more remote areas): This is an expedition that usually lasts a few days and involves trips in 4x4 vehicles and walks through the dunes. The travel time to reach the starting points of the crossing may vary.

Check-in is done in person at the reception, according to local availability, from 2PM until 5PM.

If you need early Checkin or after 5PM, please let us know as soon as possible. If you do not have a guest, we love to help!

On the day of your arrival, we will send instructions. It is important that you have Wi-fi to receive them. Let me know as soon as possible if you need something different.

Guests need to be identified, for everyone’s safety, so when 2 days are missing for their arrival, we will reinforce the photo request of the documents. Don’t worry, your data will be protected in light of the LGPD.

Checkout is in person. Our maid will arrive at 12PM to clean your accommodation for the next family.

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park (PNLM), covers the municipality of Barreirinhas and was created in June 1981, with an area of 155,000 hectares, of which 90,000 hectares of the park are made up of white sand dunes and seasonal lagoons of rainwater.

The Lagoa Azul and the Lagoa Bonita are two of the largest lagoons, with their natural pools of crystal clear waters. The park is composed of areas of restinga, fields of free dunes and oceanic coast, being visited all year by tourists from all over the world

Best known city of the Lençóis Maranhenses, Barreirinhas is located 250km from São Luís - capital of the state of Maranhão, and is the main base for those who wish to explore the region.

The history of this paradise began to be formally written on June 2, 1981, when the federal government, aware of the uniqueness and fragility of this ecosystem, decreed the creation of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. The main objective was to protect this unique landscape, ensuring the preservation of its geological formations, its biological diversity and its water resources.

Fascinating curiosities of the Lençóis Maranhenses:

Temporary Ponds, Ephemeral Life: The famous ponds are not permanent! They form during the rainy season (usually from January to June) when rainwater is dammed between the waterproof dunes. With the end of rains and evaporation, many ponds dry up, to reappear in the following year, in a surprising natural cycle.

Fish "Travelers": Despite being freshwater lagoons and isolated between the dunes, some species of fish manage to survive! One of the theories is that their eggs resist the dry period in moist mud and hatch with the return of water. Another hypothesis suggests the arrival of birds that carry the eggs on their paws. It is the resilience of life in a seemingly inhospitable environment!

The Dance of the Dunes: The dunes are not static! The constant action of strong winds, especially during the dry season, molds and moves the dunes continuously. The landscape of Lençóis is always changing, creating new forms and revealing or hiding lagoons. It is a dynamic nature in constant transformation.

A Flooded Desert: Despite its deserted appearance with vast expanses of sand, the Maranhense Sheets receive a relatively high rainfall during the rainy season. This unique combination of heavy rain and strong winds is the secret behind the formation of lagoons.

The "Fault" of the Lazy River: The Lazy River, which winds along the western edge of the park, plays a crucial role in the formation of the Lençóis. It transports sediments from the interior that, when they meet the ocean and the action of the winds, are deposited and shaped into dunes along the coast.

Hello! To get to Barreirinhas, the main gateway to the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, you have the following options by plane and car:

By plane:

Although Barreirinhas has an airport (BRB), direct commercial flights there are limited and usually more expensive. The most common route is to fly to São Luís (SLZ), the capital of Maranhão, and from there by land to Barreirinhas.

Barreirinhas Airport (BRB): Azul Linhas Aéreas operates some regular flights of small aircraft (Cessna with capacity for 9 passengers) connecting Barreirinhas to São Luís and Parnaíba. Frequency may vary, so it’s important to check directly with the airline. Prices tend to be higher.

São Luís International Airport - Marechal Cunha Machado (SLZ): This is the main access airport to Lençóis Maranhenses. São Luís receives direct flights from several capitals and major cities of Brazil.

How to get from São Luís to Barreirinhas:

Transfer (Van or Minibus): It is the most common and practical option. Several agencies and tourism companies offer shared or private transfer service, with departures from the airport or hotels in São Luís. The trip takes around 4 hours on the road (BR-135 and MA-402), which is paved for most of the route.

Some vans leave the airport of São Luís around 4am, ideal for those arriving from night flights. Bus Line: The company Cisne Branco operates bus lines between São Luís and Barreirinhas. The trip takes about 4.5 hours to 5 hours. From São Luís airport to the bus station, you will need to take a taxi or other transport.

Taxi: It is the most expensive option and offers more flexibility of schedules. The taxi route from São Luís to Barreirinhas takes approximately the same time as the transfer or private car.

Car Rental: You can rent a car at the airport of São Luís and drive to Barreirinhas. The journey is relatively simple, following by BR-135 and MA-402. However, remember that in Barreirinhas you will not need much of the car, because the tours to Lençóis are done in 4x4 vehicles accredited.

Other Nearby Airports (Less Common):

Parnaíba Airport (PHB): Located in Piauí, about 3h30 by car from Barreirinhas. It can be an option if you are combining the visit to the Lençóis with the Parnaíba Delta.

Jericoacoara Airport (JJD): Further away (about 9 hours of travel), it is an option for those who are doing the complete Route of Emotions. By car:

Getting to Barreirinhas by car is possible, mainly from São Luís:

From São Luís: The distance is approximately 260 km, and the trip takes about 3 to 4 hours by MA-402 (Translitorânea) and BR-135. The road is paved and well signposted on most of the stretch.
