We booked a one-night houseboat stay in the Kerala backwaters and unfortunately felt completely mis-sold.
On arrival, there was no communication. We were asked to pay extra for meals despite them being included in our booking. We were also put on a small boat and only told five minutes into the journey that an additional fee would be charged with no prior communication.
The houseboat was nothing like the advertisement. It was old and run-down with a cracked glass deck, plastic unsafe chairs and poor standards. The bathroom was smelly, the shower water was freezing cold and came out yellow…
At night +++ mosquitoes in the bedroom which made us feel very comfortable.
The captain and chef were both very nice, and we have no complaints about them personally. However it was very difficult to communicate with anyone on the boat so it was hard to know what was going on and to order food items etc.
Overall, the experience was expensive and nowhere near the standard advertised. Poor organisation, unexpected charges and unacceptable facilities completely ruined what should have been a lovely experience.
Sadly, we would not recommend this houseboat to anyone.
