Description

Visit a fascinating former Viking settlement as you escape to the scenic island of Björkö on the tranquil waters of Lake Mälaren. Join a knowledgeable guide as you stroll the lush landscape of this verdant paradise and explore the 8th-century settlement of Birka.

Leave Stockholm on board a comfortable boat, cruising across Lake Mälarenas to arrive on the serene shores of Björkö. Once you arrive, begin a guided walking tour of the island as you make your way to Birka, considered one of the earliest urban settlements in Scandinavia.

The village site is surrounded by a large Viking-age cemetery with almost 3,000 graves for you to explore. Check out a museum that holds magnificent artefacts that reveal details about the daily lives of the Vikings who once lived here, and then circle around the old, excavated fort and harbour.

Follow your guide to a hill east of the village, where you can find a stone cross dedicated to Saint Ansgar, a 9th-century bishop who became known as the Apostle of the North. Once you've fully wandered around the island, feel free to relax at a local restaurant, wander the nature trails, or take a refreshing swim in Lake Mälaren's crystal-clear waters before you return to Stockholm.
